The 'IRIS Dena', belonging to the Navy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, is clearly a military warship. Although it is referred to as a destroyer according to Iranian naval practices, internationally it is classified as a Moudge-class frigate.
This vessel, built in Iran using indigenous technology, was commissioned into the country's naval service in 2021.This warship is equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry, completely different from a typical passenger or commercial vessel. Accordingly, it is armed with anti-ship missiles like 'Qader', anti-aircraft missiles, 76mm naval guns, torpedoes, and small anti-aircraft weapons. Additionally, facilities for helicopter landings are installed at the stern of the vessel.
With the aim of showcasing Iranian naval power internationally, this vessel has actively participated in numerous long-range operations. These include its circumnavigation of the world in 2022 and 2023, as well as participation in international naval exercises such as 'MILAN 2026' held in India.
However, amidst escalating regional hostilities, the vessel met a tragic fate on March 04, 2026, in the southern seas of Sri Lanka. After issuing an emergency distress signal, the ship, suspected to have been hit by a submarine attack, sank into the sea. Some reports indicate that this could have been an attack launched by a submarine belonging to the US Navy.
Following this incident, Sri Lankan authorities and rescue teams immediately sprang into action, successfully rescuing between 30 and 35 sailors, including those severely injured. However, over 100 other crew members who were on board the vessel are reported missing, and search operations to find them are ongoing.
