Missile Strike in Ukraine’s Sumy City: 34 Killed, Including Children

At least 34 people have been killed and 117 injured, including 15 children, following a devastating Russian missile strike on the city center of Sumy, Ukraine, according to Ukrainian officials.

The attack occurred around 10:15 AM local time (8:15 BST) when two Iskander ballistic missiles hit the area surrounding Sumy State University and its congress center.

Footage from the scene shows bodies scattered across the street, and two children are confirmed to be among the dead.

President Zelensky: "Only deranged minds can do this"

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as an act of pure terror, highlighting that even a baby born this year is among the injured.

"The strike hit right in the heart of the city — on Palm Sunday. Only completely deranged scum can do something like this," he said.

He urged the international community to respond firmly, adding that "ballistic missiles and air bombs are not stopped by talk".

Major Damage Across the City

According to Ukrainian authorities:

20 buildings were damaged, including

4 educational institutions

Shops and cafes

5 residential buildings

10 cars and several trams were destroyed.

The missiles reportedly carried cluster munitions, which can cause widespread and indiscriminate damage.

Eyewitnesses described burning vehicles and shattered trees, showing the extent of destruction.

Eyewitness Testimonies

A woman named Nataliia, who was driving a group of children to a shelter, said:

“If we hadn’t moved to the shelter in time, we would have been in the car — and we’d be dead.”

Another resident, Svitlana Smirnova (51), shared that she had just left church when the missiles hit. Her friend, who was on a bus with her son, was critically injured and is now in hospital, unconscious after surgery.

Global Condemnation

World leaders have strongly condemned the attack:

Keith Kellogg, U.S. special envoy to Ukraine, called it "a disgraceful act", noting it's the reason former President Trump is "working hard to end the war."

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called the strike "horrific" and demanded that President Putin agree to an immediate, unconditional ceasefire.

French President Emmanuel Macron stated:

"Russia alone started this war, and Russia alone continues it — with blatant disregard for human life and international law."

Macron and Starmer are reportedly pushing for a "coalition of the willing" to enforce peace in Ukraine.
