Mysterious Murder Investigations handed over to CID

The investigation into the mysterious death of Samarajeewa (60), the husband of popular media personality Shriyani Wijesinghe, has raised concerns, and the Mt. Lavinia Magistrate’s Court has now handed over the matter to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The Mt. Lavinia Additional Magistrate Hemali Halpandeni issued this order today (04), after considering the shortcomings in the investigation process carried out by the Dehiwala police.

Two months ago, while receiving treatment at the intensive care unit of Kalubowila Hospital, Hemajeewa passed away. The Chief Judicial Medical Officer of Kalubowila Teaching Hospital, Dr. A. Dayapala, reported that the body showed severe blunt force injuries and excessive blood accumulation in the head.

The deceased, Hemajeewa, was the father of two children. One of his daughters is studying at the medical faculty, and the other at the engineering faculty. During the day, he was involved in business activities, and at night, he worked as a trishaw driver. Samarajeewa, who lived on Medical Road in Dehiwala, left for work as usual on January 1st and was later reported missing when he did not return home that night. Despite several phone calls made by his wife, the final response came from a Dehiwala police officer.

Around 11:00 PM that night, a former Air Force officer, the husband of a lawyer living on Hill Road in Dehiwala, reported to the 119 emergency police line that someone had fallen in the yard of the lawyer’s house. The police officers who arrived at the location did not immediately take action to send the injured person to the hospital.

Later, after a considerable delay, a group of officers from the 1990 ambulance service took Samarajeewa to the Kalubowila hospital. On January 2nd, he was admitted to the South Colombo Teaching Hospital with severe blunt force injuries. Despite receiving treatment, he passed away on the morning of January 3rd.

Attorney Geethma Pranandu, who appeared on behalf of the deceased’s family, presented the following points in court regarding the actions of the Dehiwala police during the investigation:

1. Failing to promptly send the injured person to the hospital.
2. Making the injured person change clothes before treatment.
3. Not conducting a proper investigation into the death.

According to the post-mortem report, the cause of death was attributed to blunt force trauma. Attorney Geethma Pranandu also presented photographs and videos, questioning the Dehiwala police's handling of the case and the serious issues surrounding the incident.

The Dehiwala police, under the leadership of the station officer, attempted to mislead the court by making small statements and trying to create a different narrative regarding the incident, according to the complainant's side.
Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

After considering all the facts, Additional Magistrate Hemali Halpandeni emphasized that it was unlikely that the Dehiwala police would conduct a fair investigation into the death and ordered that further investigations be conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

A special investigation team, led by an Assistant Police Superintendent, has been set up to carry out an in-depth probe. As per the Western Province South Deputy Inspector General of Police, Gayath Marapana, CCTV footage is being examined to identify the locations and individuals involved with the deceased during the period leading up to his death.

Several suspicious factors have been highlighted, including:

1. A party that took place at the house of the lawyer (where the deceased was found) on the night of the incident, reportedly held by the lawyer’s husband before his departure to Qatar.
2. The way the deceased’s trishaw was found parked on the road.
3. The presence of foul odor emanating from the deceased’s body.

Shriyani Wijesinghe, the widow, expressed that her husband was a peaceful person and that she could not bear the way he died. She suspects that he was attacked by a group of people.

An autopsy has been conducted to determine whether the death was a murder or suicide, and an open verdict has been issued. Under the guidance of Dehiwala Police Chief Inspector Anuradha Herath and CID Chief Inspector Asela Prasad Senewiratne, further investigations are ongoing.

Shriyani Wijesinghe is calling on the authorities to deliver justice for her husband’s death and insists on a thorough investigation to clarify her suspicions. The police have stated that they are conducting an extensive investigation to address these concerns
