The Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Pradeep Nilanga Dela, has announced a rare and revered event—the special exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic. This extraordinary occasion will take place in Kandy from April 18, starting from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and will continue for 10 days, allowing devotees to pay homage from 12:00 noon to 5:30 p.m.
The Sacred Tooth Relic: A Symbol of Sri Lanka’s Spiritual and Royal Heritage
The Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha is enshrined in the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth) in Kandy, one of the most venerated Buddhist sites in the world. According to historical accounts, the Relic was brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th century A.D. by Princess Hemamali and Prince Dantha from the Kalinga region of India. Since then, it has been regarded as a symbol of sovereignty, with Sri Lankan kings acting as its guardian.
The Temple of the Tooth remains the spiritual heart of Sri Lanka, drawing thousands of devotees and tourists each year. Rituals and daily offerings are performed to honor the Relic, which is usually kept in a golden casket and is not visible to the public. Special expositions, like the upcoming one, are rare and highly significant, offering devotees an opportunity to witness the sacred artifact and seek blessings.

A Time of Devotion and Reflection
The timing of this special exposition, just after the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, makes it an auspicious occasion. The event is expected to draw large crowds of Buddhist devotees, as well as visitors from around the world, eager to experience the spiritual power and historical grandeur of the Sacred Tooth Relic.
As preparations begin, the city of Kandy will once again become a center of deep religious devotion and cultural heritage, reminding the nation of the unbroken legacy of the Sacred Tooth Relic—a relic that has shaped the history, faith, and identity of Sri Lanka for over a thousand years.
