The Matara Magistrate's Court has issued an order for the arrest of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has already commenced investigations to apprehend him.
Failed Attempts to Locate Tennakoon
As part of the operation, four residences in Colombo and other areas, where he was believed to be hiding, were searched yesterday. However, authorities confirmed that he was not present at any of those locations.
The Weligama Shooting Incident
The arrest warrant relates to a shooting incident in front of a hotel in the Weligama-Pelena area. The court has ordered the arrest and presentation of Tennakoon and seven others before the court in connection with the case.
Conspiracy to Commit Murder
The case, filed under case number 6314/323 at the Matara Magistrate's Court, involves charges of conspiracy to commit murder.
Ties to the Drug Trade
The shooting occurred on December 31, 2023, when the CID attempted to arrest a group linked to drug trafficking, allegedly associated with Nadun Chinthaka, also known as ‘Harak Kata.’

The CID has intensified its search efforts, deploying special investigation teams. Further inquiries are expected to continue in the coming days, with the suspects likely to be presented before the court soon.
