Former Parliamentarian and Son Arrested for Ilegal Vehicle Assembly

Former UNP Parliamentarian for Puttalam District, Shanta Abeysekara, and his son have been arrested today (18) by the Cyber Crimes Investigation Unit of the Illegal Assets Investigation Division on charges of dismantling and concealing parts of a luxury motor vehicle that was illegally assembled.

According to reports, during a raid conducted in the early hours of the 6th of this month by the Illegal Assets Investigation Division, many parts of the vehicle were recovered. However, the suspects had been in hiding since then and were apprehended today. The two suspects are scheduled to be presented before the Mahara Magistrate's Court tomorrow (19).

Investigations revealed that a Land Cruiser Prado, suspected to have been used by the former MP, was illegally assembled. Following this lead, the Cyber Crimes Investigation Unit conducted an in-depth inquiry over several days.

During a special search operation, it was discovered that the vehicle had been dismantled and hidden in two different locations. The chassis and body of the vehicle were found in a house near the former MP’s residence, while the engine and other parts were recovered from a coconut estate owned by him in Puttalam.

Further investigations confirmed that the vehicle had been illegally registered using the engine and chassis number of a Prado owned by the Department of Agriculture. Additionally, the vehicle's primary identification markings had been tampered with.

In recent months, law enforcement authorities have seized several illegally assembled vehicles, leading investigators to confirm that former MP Shanta Abeysekara and his son were involved in dismantling and hiding this vehicle.

Shanta Abeysekara had previously been arrested in 2004 for being a member of an illegal assembly and for possession of an illegal firearm, while his son was arrested in 2019 for assaulting a police officer
