Dimuth Migrates to Australia

Former cricket captain and veteran opening batsman, Dimuth Karunaratne, has officially announced his decision to retire from international cricket. His final international match will be the second Test against Australia, which begins tomorrow, February 6, at the Galle International Stadium.

At 36 years old, Dimuth Karunaratne has decided to retire from cricket after marking a significant milestone in his career following his 100th Test match. To date, he has played 99 Test matches and scored 7,172 runs, earning a distinguished place in Sri Lankan cricket history.

Since beginning his Test career in 2012, Dimuth has scored 15 centuries and 34 half-centuries, making him one of Sri Lanka’s most successful opening batsmen. Particularly after 2015, he played a pivotal role as a key batsman for the Sri Lanka Test team, demonstrating exceptional ability to score centuries in the second innings of Test matches.
Coaching

After his retirement from cricket, Dimuth Karunaratne shared his future plans, stating, "After stepping away from cricket, I have decided to pursue qualifications to become a coach. To be a coach, I need Level 2, 3, and 4 certifications. I plan to study Levels 2 and 3 in Australia."

He also added, "After being involved in cricket for such a long time, I am looking forward to living in Australia with my parents. Later, I plan to use my knowledge and experience to contribute to the development of Sri Lankan cricket or cricket in another country. I expect to fully engage in coaching after 3-4 years."

Former cricketer Lasith Malinga commented that Dimuth Karunaratne is retiring at the peak of his career. Through his social media accounts, Malinga urged cricket fans to come to the Galle Stadium to watch Dimuth’s final Test match.

Before retiring from Test cricket, Dimuth is set to participate in another special occasion. He will play his final first-class match for the S. S. C. team against the N. C. C. team at the N. C. C. Grounds in Colombo from February 14 to 16 under the Major League three-day cricket tournament.

Dimuth Karunaratne, who has set numerous notable records, including three selections to the ICC Annual Test Team, became the captain of the Sri Lanka Test team in 2019. He also led the one-day international team before the World Cup in the same year. Under his leadership from 2019 to 2023, Sri Lanka played 30 Test matches, winning 12 of them.

Dimuth has played 50 one-day international matches, scoring 1,316 runs, including one century and 11 half-centuries. He holds the record as Sri Lanka’s fourth-highest Test run-scorer, with only Angelo Mathews, Kumar Sangakkara, and Mahela Jayawardene ahead of him.

The retirement of this exceptional player marks the end of an era in Sri Lankan cricket, and his contributions will forever be etched in the history of Sri Lankan cricket.
