The government has decided to resolve the existing issues in the process of issuing foreign travel documents by implementing 24-hour operations at the Immigration and Emigration Department. Additionally, the department will issue approximately 4,000 passports per day under a service security system until the backlog is cleared.
To expedite the department's tasks, the Cabinet has granted approval for retired Deputy Controllers and Assistant Controllers to be re-employed. This decision was officially announced yesterday (5th) by Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalin Jayathissa during a press briefing.
Under this decision, the aim is to utilize the specialized knowledge and practical experience of retired officials with previous service experience to improve the efficiency of the department's operations.
Furthermore, current management service officers and development officers in government service will also be appointed to assist with these tasks. Minister Jayathissa emphasized that these appointments will be made based on the agreement of the relevant officials.
The government expects that this step will enhance the department's capacity to deliver services, leading to more efficient immigration and emigration activities. The primary objective is to improve the department's services by utilizing the long-term experience and knowledge of retired officials.
According to the Cabinet's decision, the new appointments will follow proper administrative procedures and be carried out transparently. The government anticipates that these new appointments will help raise the standards of service in the department.
