Doctor who resigned on her own ...
a Pakistan graduate

An incident was reported of a lady-doctor of Islamic faith who resigned last week from her services at Homagama Basic Hospital. It was actually reported that authorities had prohibited her from being clad in her niqab mode of dress obviously covering her face while on duty at Homagama Basic Hospital on the request of the patients there. She of course had disliked this order and had resigned from service, it was further reported. It is understood that she had been serving at out-patients section in Homagama Hospital while dressed
in the niqab and on that occasion the patients there have declined taking treatment from this doctor.

As a consequence the request made on her by superintendent of the hospital to report to work without the face being covered has however resulted in a dejected mood in her and after the order imposed on her she had not reported to work and finally had decided to forward a resignation letter to the hospital superintendent. On the instance the patients created an opposition the medical superintendent has informed that he has made the said doctor as well as her father and has even engaged in an argument about it and has left hospital premises. After her departure she has kept away from her duties without notice till May 2nd and subsequently has given a telephone call and has informed that she was sick. Subsequently she has forwarded a letter to medical superintendent of Homagama hospital, Dr. J. Hettiarachchi tendering her resignation.

The said lady doctor was a resident of Maharagama aged 30 years and is a spinster. She has joined the hospital in the month of January, 2018. Prior to that she has served under difficult circumstances at a hospital in Trincomalee district. Whatever it is, it is understood that she is not someone who has had any medical college in this country as such. She has in fact secured her medical degree in Pakistan. As she was successful in a medical examination held here by the medical council she was admitted to the Sri Lankan medical service. In any case she has already left her service at the hospital.
