"Both 19 and 18 will be revoked" -- Maithripala Sirisena
President Mr. Maithripala Sirisena has yesterday stated that the 18th amendment which stabilised the opportunity that a President could contest an unlimited number of times by setting up the 2/3 majority during the past Mahinda Rajapaksa regime as well as the 19th amendment which limited those powers to a limited number and increased powers of the Prime Minister should be abolished.
The President said at a function at Colombo Bandaranaike Memorial Hall yesterday (23) which
incidentally was held for commemorating the 40th anniversary of national housing authority that if this country is to proceed on a righteous footing, both the 18th and 19th amendments of the constitution should be abolished.
He said that "he formed a regime with aspirations of preventing a government at a time when a situation was prevalent where a dictator and autocrat would take the reigns of this country through the 18th amendment, what really happened was that because of the 19th amendment the country faced political instability".
United national party member of parliament, Hesha Withanage has expressed ideas by now that the statement made by the President is rejected. What he points out is that the 19th amendment too was brought by the President. What united front freedom alliance member of parliament, Udaya Gammanpila pointed out was that the 18th amendment was a democratic amendment while Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa of people's liberation front said was that the President should take steps to achieve the objectives having introduced the 19th amendment.
Whatever it is, general secretary and member of parliament of Sri Lanka freedom party, Dayasiri Jayasekera has mentioned that everybody who extended support for the 19th amendment are responsible for the political instability in which the country is placed in.
