After engaging in scout-training in school till 4 in the evening he had come home and after going into a room with a rope in the house has tried out attempting the knot once again. The student has subsequently tried out the 'ruwal' knot relevant to the lesson learned and then after attaching the rope to a beam on the roof has tried to descend in which instance the rope has tightened round his neck, taking his life away.
This incident has happened on Friday (22) evening around 5.30 and Kurunduwattha police have taken steps to remove the body to Gampola hospital.
The student's mother said: "I have three children. The deceased child is the eldest. He went to school and returned home at about 4 in the evening. After removing his clothes and taking a wash he had his meals and then went into the room with a rope. I asked him what he was going to do. He replied saying, 'We have a scout-training ... I am getting ready for it'. I was getting ready to cook in the kitchen adjoining that room. There is no ceiling for the roof in the house. I saw him climbing up in the room and putting the rope to a beam. I then shouted at him harshly, at which moment he responded saying, 'Amma you wait without shouting ... I can't engage in this training'.
As there was no noise I told my 5 year old small son to go and see what 'aiya' was doing. He went into the room and came back saying 'aiya has put a rope and is swing in the swing'. As a short while passed, as there was no sound I told him to go and see again. He then came back and said that 'aiya is hanging motionless'.
When I went there he was hanging from the rope. I went out and yelled. Then child's father's brother and neighbours came and had a look and said 'there's no point, let's tell the police'. Under instructions of Kurunduwattha police officer in charge, inspector of police, Mr. Chandika Sri Kantha , sub-inspector Rajapaksa and police constable (67117) Thillakarathna arrived at the location and after conducting an inquiry, despatched the body to hospital.
Judicial medical officer of Nawalapitiya court, Mr. A.B.M. Eisel who conducted the post-mortem returned a verdict of death caused by the respiratory tract being blocked with neck being strangled. At this point what the judicial medical officer said was that when motivating students towards this type of risky activity, teachers and parents should act with great responsibility.
