Illicit lover of daughter stabs her and kills her mother in Kottawa ... and beats a retreat
Kottawa police say that a person is supposed to have attacked a woman with a sharp instrument towards dawn last 10th killing her and had caused injuries to her 21 year old daughter and had then beat a retreat is being hunted on a wide-scale.
The deceased is a woman named Shriyani Kodikkara (55) living down Suhada Mawatha, Sirimalwatta, Kottawa. The suspect it is understood is a lecturer in Psychology. The 21 year old woman who sustained injuries in this incident has been admitted to Homagama Basic Hospital for
treatment as a result of several stab injuries she has faced on her chest region and an operation has been performed on her and her condition has now turned out for the better, police say.
Police also say that the 21 year old woman is a mother with a three and a half year old child; but is safe and sound in this fracas that took place. There was yelling heard on last 10th from the direction of the house where this tragedy took place and simultaneously the 21 year old daughter had rushed out of the house and had been ringing doorbells and banging on gates of neighbouring houses pleading for help, police say that neighbours said. At that moment the neighbours had approached the house concerned and had notified the 119 police emergency as well as the 1990 Suwaseriya ambulance. Thus the 21 year old woman was admitted to Homagama Basic Hospital in the Suwaseriya ambulance.
At the moment of the tragedy the suspect, supposed illicit lover of the wounded daughter had been inside this house and he is a lecturer on Psychology at a private university in Malabe. Police say that he had fled the scene after the incident, it was revealed at initial investigations. On the night of this tragedy police suspect that there may have been a drinking party in progress and when trying to settle a dispute that took place between the said daughter and the suspect, the suspect may have stabbed the mother and then fled. The woman who faced the assault had come running out of the house profusely bleeding; however because of her serious condition, she had collapsed near the staircase and breathed her last, police say.
The suspect who fled the scene had in fact taken this house at a monthly rent of Rs. 37000 one and a half months ago for 6 moths and therefore this suspect had been in the habit of coming to this house quite often and spending the nights there.
The deceased woman and her daughter had come there from Pugoda area while the suspect was a 27 year old person living in Kachasikulam area in Vavuniya, police say. Officers of scene of crime investigation of Nugegoda division and fingerprint officers of crime-reporting division had arrived at the scene concerned and started investigations. Homagama acting magistrate Mr. Padmasiri Jayawardena had arrived at the place of crime and had conducted an on the spot inquiry and had taken steps to forward the dead body to consultant judicial medical officer of Kalubowila Hospital and to provide a report, police were instructed.
