hangs himself inside cell!
A 23 year old young man from Gampola area who was addicted to heroin and after having engaged in robbery with the idea of getting some money had then used is mother sell the items he so robbed and in the process had been apprehended. After the arrest he was remanded with his mother on which occasion he had hanged himself most unexpectedly inside his cell itself and had died on the spot.
He had been thus remanded in front of the cell where his mother was remanded and had spent his
time thoroughly depressed. Ultimately he had hanged himself with the long sleeved shirt he had been wearing and thus ended his life.
The suicide victim is a 23 year old named Medagedera Thivanka Madhushan Lakshitha. He had broken into a house in that area and after robbing gold jewellery and subsequently had as an accomplice used the services of his own mother to sell those robbed items and finally both parties were apprehended by Gampola Pussellawa police.
The two of them were produced before Gampola additional magistrate, Mr. Ranjith Premarathna and were remanded till next 20th. As such both mother and son were detained in two prison cells separately, close to Gampola courts till they were to be taken to the prison cell at Pallekele, Kandy. There had been two other suspects in the cell where this young man was and opposite that cell door was his mother's cell. During the time he was in the cell, he had removed the shirt he was wearing and after tieing a knot on the hinge of the door of he cell, had hanged himself at a moment the other two suspects had gone to sleep and also at a time the prison jailors' attention was not focused on him. He had died on the spot.
Those in the cell have provided evidence to the effect that he had been spending time in a highly depressed mood for having been taken into custody together with his own mother. His body after being taken to Gampaha hospital was later subjected to a post mortem.
This youth was the only boy in a family of three and has become addicted to heroin when he had gone for a job in Colombo, the boy's father remarked. He had been arrested in connection with a robbery of a shop in Gampola, Atabage, Dadayama area and robbed Rs. fifty thousand in cash and jewellery. He had been accused of a theft of jewellery of of a school teacher and another house breaking incident too. He had used Rs. fifty thousand of that cash on heroin and with the balance money had bought a three wheeler, he had confessed to police. He had further said that it was his mother who used to convert the jewellery he robs and for that reason his mother too has been taken into custody.
Because he had been unable to get rid of his addiction to heroin and because of the need for money, the mother had helped him to mortgage the jewellery and give him the money, she had admitted. The dead body has been handed over to the father of the deceased and the mother is still in remand. Police inquiries are proceeding in this connection.
