A person who threw a stone at a mobile phone and electrical goods showroom glass window at Union Place, Slave Island after breaking the glass had looted five modern mobile phones to the tune of Rs. 6,50,000 was taken into custody day-before-yesterday (22) when inside Vihara Maha Devi Park, Town Hall, Slave Island police say.
At the moment of being apprehended the police were able to retrieve the five mobile phones in his
possession. The person so arrested is 'Belington" residing in Weligama, police say. The police also added that he came to be known as "Belington" because of his habit of getting on top of tall trees in Vihara Maha Devi Park and watch the movements of lovers.
The suspect has smashed the glass of a showroom with a large stone around 1.00 in the morning last 19th after which he had entered the showroom and has robbed these mobile phones according to complaints received by police. Though investigations were launched by using police dogs and methods of searching for fingerprints, nothing could be found, police say. On checking CCTV scenes, he had come there a few days back and had spied around and as such the suspect could be found. The suspect had been watching movements of romantic couples frequently by staying on top of large trees in Vihara Maha Devi Park and on such occasions whenever he was nabbed by the security security forces he would resort to putting up a 'show' to give the impression that he is suffering from epilepsy and thus scare them. He had prior to this broken a showroom in Colpetty area and had taken away items there, it was revealed, police say.
