A high police officer said that the police suspect personnel of the private security force being linked to the robbery of two crores and twenty lakhs robbery carried out in Bulathsinghala area. He further mentioned that statements of some employees attached to a particular security firm in Narahenpita collecting monies deposited in ATM machines in private banks would be secured in future. The officer also mentioned that the driver of the van taken into custody and the security guard who was in the van at the time of the robbery were interrogated at length.
Six police teams have been deployed to investigate this robbery. A high police officer stated that the
number plate used on the deluxe jeep used for the robbery was the number plate of a jeep belonging to a person in Nugegoda as revealed in initial inquiries. Twelve sacks containing money had been robbed by the marauders and had beat a retreat after barging into the restaurant where the driver of the van transporting the money, the security guard and a cashier were having their meals and throwing chillie powder on their faces.
A couple who were passing by on a motor cycle at the moment of the robbery had approached the robbers on information conveyed by the van driver and had handed over the number of the jeep, police say. According to inquiries carried out across the Motor Traffic Department on that number, and information revealed in that connection pointed to a registered owner of that vehicle who was resident in Nugegoda and he was summoned and questioned in that respect. What was exposed in that instance was that he had purchased the jeep concerned about two weeks before from Ragama area, police sources state. That police officer mentioned that the said jeep according to information revealed, it was used by the Late minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle as well as a deputy minister of Kalutara district sometime back. It was revealed across CCTV footage that the marauders had arrived at Bulathsinghala from Horana; then proceeded from Naragala area towards Horana once again and had arrived in Horana in front of the restaurant, it was revealed. A high officer of police said that apart from Bulathsinghala police, officers of a special unit of Panadura division, Kalutara district crime unit, Kalutara division crime detection unit and Matugama special unit officers were deployed to arrest the suspects.
The driver of the van which transported the cash and the security officer who were taken into custody were produced before Matugama court after which each of them were released on a personal surety of Rs. 100 lakhs each by magistrate Mr. Kosala Senadheera. It was Nuwan Rasika the driver of the van from Kotagodawatta, in Peramba Lane, Akuressa and Yasaratna Bandara of Ambagaswewa security officer in this case.
