'There is nothing called pills for sterility' ...
professional medical board confirm
'Sterilized pills' was subjected to various definitions of scholars which created some uproar all over the country was finally completely explained this afternoon (15) at a media briefing held at Sri Lanka Medical Association hall.
On this occasion a Board comprising of a group of medical practitioners have come forward
voluntarily and it was thereby confirmed that there are no medicines available in Western medicine that could have an enough impact on the fertility of race of community and that there is no scientific evidence available to the effect that it has been successfully carried out to the contrary. The explanation brought forward by them is as follow:
-----------------------------------------------
* Can sterility be effected through medical pills?
We are a group of senior medical practitioners engaged in health services in Sri Lanka. As an unfounded fear has gripped society that sterility could be effected by mixing sterilised-pills with food, we believe that it is a duty of ours to clarify the truth behind it. We wish to say with responsibility that this has no foundation at all in the scientific context. We also emphasis with responsibility that introduction of medical pills, powders or injections cannot under any circumstances make a group of people or a race go barren, for that matter.
There are a number of reasons which influence the fertility of both males and females to establish conception. In order for the fertility of a man, it is essential that there should be a proper, normal structure and the presence of adequate number of active sperms. So is it necessary that in the instance that the number of spermatozoa is reduced or their function and mobility are impaired, the ability to impregnate a woman is thus reduced. This is identified as sub-fertility and in rare cases infertility could occur. These things affect the fertility of a woman. All birth control pills and injections available at present are for use only for women and what it does is inhibit conception on a temporary basis. There is no birth control pill to be orally taken by men which results in sterility and is not available in the world. Though some medicines used on a long-term basis for some illnesses could result in infertility, such medicine if reduced as per a single dosage or some dosages, there is no possibility of such a condition arising. This sub-fertility that occurs because of such medicines could be reversed once their useage is stopped. In order to secure such medicines, a medical prescription from a registered Western physician should be forwarded.
In short, medicines which could make a sufficient impact on a group of people or race are not available infertile are not available in Western medicine to render them infertile and there neither is scientific evidence that it could be done either, we emphasise. We whose names appear below have come forward to bring this information on a voluntary basis and wish to mention that all expenditure in this connection will be borne by us.
