Drivers' trade union shows hostility towards doctor who rescued mother and baby by finding solution for ambulance without driver
A pregnant lady who faced a motor vehicle accident was rushed to Rajanganaya Yaya 11 Provincial Hospital under emergency conditions. A doctor on duty there who realised that the said mother and her unborn baby were in a precarious situation had decided that the mother should be immediately despatched to Anuradhapura Hospital.
On this instance since the driver of the ambulance was on leave the doctor who provided a quick
solution to overcome the situation at hand had got down an outside driver and managed to thus solve the problem, thinking of the lives of the patients at stake. However, an association who calls themselves Ambulance Trade Union working to rule, had made a complaint to North Central audit division requesting them to carry out an inquiry saying that the action taken by the doctor concerned had violated staff rules.
It was Doctor Gayan Dilruk in charge of Rajangana Yaya 11 Provincial Hospital who faced this situation. While travelling last morning (17) in the company of the husband on the motor cycle this mother who was with a 36 weeks old baby had fallen from the motor cycle and was admitted to hospital in a serious condition. After having been admitted the doctor has noted that the baby in her womb was suffering from a weak heart-beat and had thus paid particular attention to this circumstances. The victim's husband had pleaded, virtually bring down the hospital to save the life of the baby in his wife's womb and the baby is supposed to have been the first offspring conceived after 7 years after marriage.
Though the doctor had then decided instantly to transfer the young pregnant lady to Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital in order to rescue the the mother's and life of the unborn baby, because the ambulance driver had gone on leave that day and there was no driver to handle the ambulance thus having had to face a serious predicament. The doctor had then verbally informed the Central Province Director of Health and had taken action to dispatch the patient through an outside driver to Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital some 35 kilometers away.
The doctor was thus able to save the lives of both, with a sense of strong dedication. However, the trade union leader who went into a rage for having brought the patient through an outside driver sans the ambulance driver of the hospital had made amends by questioning after complaints lodged for having misappropriated the ambulance even before the patient was brought to Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital by installing audit officers there.
The ambulance trade union leader has reprimanded the doctor saying that he should be ashamed for having misappropriated the ambulance and in turn the doctor had responded saying that the trade union leader who says that saving two lives is an act of misappropriation is something which could be considered as shameful by himself without a sense of humanity even before reprimanding him as shameful. An officer of the ambulance service trade union has yesterday (17) forwarded a petition to the North Central health audit unit to conduct an audit against the doctor immediately. Because the said doctor has hastened to take appropriate measures, the said mother and the baby inside her womb were in a good health condition at Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital yesterday (17), it was reported.
