Lawyer bridegroom files legal action against Kingsbury Hotel for having got stuck in elevator at marriage auspicious time
When moving in the elevator of a hotel to enter the wedding hall at the marriage auspicious time on his wedding day ... because of the inconvenience caused as a result of a technical fault and the loss sustained by missing the auspicious moment, the bridegroom who happens to be an Attorney-at-Law
is now prepared to file legal action for 50 lakhs against Kingsbury Hotel, Colombo where this incident took place.
This is how he described the incident: "After I decided to get married to Sureka Jayasingha it was decided to have our wedding at Colombo Kingsbury Hotel. As such we came to Kingsbury Hotel and had a discussion with the officials there and made all arrangements to have the wedding on October 22nd, 2017. After both of us decided to have the wedding on 10th floor (Victorian Ballroom) festival hall, my partner Sureka went into an agreement with officials of Kingsbury Hotel. We reserved the festival hall for our 150 invitees.
The date of our wedding was thus fixed to be held on 22nd October, 2017 and after signing the register it was fixed for 7.58 in the night at the auspicious hour. Arrangements were made so that initially I and subsequently the bride was to arrive at the Victorian Ballroom of the hotel on the 19th floor. As such, I ascended elevator No. 2 on the ground floor of Kingsbury Hotel at about 7.45 in the night. With me, Mrs. Sweenitha Nanayakkara, my mother who is an Acting Magistrate, Mr. Chandadasa Nanayakkara my father who was a retired Judge of Appeal Courts, dance artistes and cameramen numbering about 10 got into this elevator.
When this electric elevator was moving up from ground floor to 10th floor, there was a big sound which was heard somewhere between the 1st floor and the 5th and the elevator stopped moving. At the same time, lights inside the lift began to dim to a large extent. Just then my mother who was in her 68th year got confused and give out a yell. We then switched on the lights on our mobile phones and began to shout out from the microphone inside and asked for help; but nobody responded.
Having got stuck inside, we were shocked. Because of it, our clothing we were dressed in for the wedding became soaked with perspiration. For about 10 minutes we were all trapped inside the electric elevator. When staying like this ... suddenly the lift began to function again and at once started moving up.
As the lift did not stop at the expected place, we who were inside had to jump out from a height of about one foot. My mother who was in an ailing condition and my father too had to make a jump from the lift. So jumping my mother sprained her leg. We who were stuck inside the electric elevator, highly shocked and embarassed and soaked with sweat after getting out from it had to face a large crowd who had assembled there.
