What Ravi said at the Commission -- Update
Former Minister of Finance who appeared in the presence of the Presidential Commission today has first spoken about the association he had with Arjun Aloysius, Director of Perpetual Treasuries. He had said that Aloysius family were friends of his family for a period of about 25 years and that Arjun Aloysius is known to him for a period of 10 or 12 years and further that his daughters and daughters of
Arjun Aloysius were maintaining a bond of friendship between them. He has added that there is no business connection whatsoever between he and Arjun Aloysius and that after the government came into power he kept away from his private business activities too. He also mentioned that Arjun Aloysius had come to the Ministry of Finance twice or thrice and that on such occasions no discussion took place about business dealings as such.
Subsequently, a report comprising 8600 pages relating to data secured from the phone of Arjun Aloysius by Attorney General's Department was presented before the Presidential Commission. Data that had been deleted from his mobile phone were once more restored and added to the report. Information about some short messages received from Arjun Aloysius on his mobile phone was questioned from Minister Ravi Karunanayaka. When questioned about 'Ravi K' being indicated on some SMS what Minister Ravi Karunanayaka stated was that he does not know anything about those. The Attorney General's Department stated that in certain messages the words "Hon. PM" was mentioned and that in one SMS it was mentioned "... get a copy from PM". The Attorney General's Department also drew attention to an SMS where a comment appeared mentioning that salaries were not paid to the staff of Sunday Leader newspaper and questioned about this. The judge remarked during the interrogation that it appears that Arjun Aloysius apparently has provided funds to that newspaper.
Whatever it is, what Minister Ravi Karunanayaka who rejected all such allegations said was that he is not aware of any such matters and that he has no connection with those matters. The Attorney General's Department next forwarded a report concerning a tour of Minister Ravi Karunanayaka to Singapore. It is stated in that report that on 13 occasions that he had been to Singapore, Arjun Aloysius too had been in that country. The Minister said that on several instances he had come across Arjun Aloysius in Singapore; but that those meetings were not pre-arranged ones. Further hearings would be held later.
