In the First Test between the touring Sri Lanka and South Africa commenced on the boxing day.South Africa had decided to bat after winning the toss.

After a century opening partnership between Edgar and Cook the hosts slumped to 267 for the

loss of 6  wickets at stumps.At the wickets were Quinton De Kock on 27 and Vernon Philander on 6..

JP Duminy top scored with 63 runs while Stephan Cook scored 59 runs.

Sri Lankan pacier Suranga Lakmal did not allow most of the Proteas batsmen to settle after lunch having captured four wickets for 62 runs. Rangana Herath captured 2 wickets for 48 runs.

The Test was played at the St George ground in Port Elizabeth.
