91.3 Kg. Cocaine haul rocks Colombo
A massive haul of Cocaine powder brought to this country hidden inside stocks of sugar had been detected at Wellampitiya Customs Stores premises yesterday and the contradictory figures that was announced with regard to its value has
baffled readers of newspapers.
Various newspapers today have quoted various figures of the value of this sugar stock in the form of 180, 200, 250 and 300 crores. This stock of Cocaine has been brought to this country from Brazil with the intention of deviating to a European country in turn and at the time this Cocaine stock was accepted by a Tamil businessman in Sri Lanka yesterday he was taken into custody. Even the President had been present to witness this stock of Cocaine. This raid had been conducted by the Special Narcotic Raid Unit of the Ministry of Finance.
Some form of blemish has occured during the process of calculating the genuine value and when forwarding it to the media. It maybe because of this reason that various values had been recorded about this stock of Cocaine by newspapers of today. Rivira and Today newspapers have estimated this value as 180 million while the Lankadeepa, Mawbima and Lakbima have quoted the figure as 200 crores. On the other hand the Divaina newspaper records it as 250 crores. As for Dinamina, it is 300 crores. The total weight of this stock of cocaine is 91.3 Kgs, it was reported yesterday. When enquiring the value of a kilo of Cocaine what specialist Customs Officers knowledgeable about this subject have stated that it is over '2 crores'. As such, when calculating a kilo at the rate of 2 crores, the value of this stock of Cocaine amounts to a figure of 182.6 crores.
