True story of Jaffna student covered up by Colombo media

It has been exposed to us by now that certain matters concerning Vithya the schoolgirl who was abducted and gang-raped subsequently some days ago in Jaffna have been concealed.

Though the media had reported that the police had located the dead body within the space of a few hours after her disappearance and that the suspects were apprehended, it is a justified point to be raised as to why then people of Jaffna had begun to rebel against the police and the murderers.  However the true situation of the aftermath is somewhat different. The true story as reported now is as follows:

On the day of the incident Vithya had set off to school at approximately 7. Since she had not returned home even by evening, her householders had complained to the police around 4.30 in the evening. But Kayts Police had not accepted that complaint. What they had said was that she may have eloped with a boy after school and for the home people to go back home and check for themselves. As such, those of Vithya's family had gone home and inquired from whom they knew, but to no avail. When they had gone to her school and made inquiries there they had been told that she had not turned up at school that day. Therefore the householders had kept on going to the police station and had virtually begged them to inquire about this complaint and then only at about 11 in the night the police had recorded the statement about her disappearance. However, no action had been taken in that connection until the following day.

In any case, the family members themselves who undertook the responsibility of finding the girl with determination began looking for her here and there and a brother of Vithya had the following day thought of going along the road which Vithya used to go to school, hoping to find a clue. For several hours he had walked along alone for many a mile and when going along 8th lane in Punkuduthiv with great caution his eyes fell on one of her shoes lying by the side of the road. As such, he had looked around and observed a a shrubby-thicket nearby and had walked across to the place to check whether there would be another clue. It was at that time he was shocked to find the corpse of his sister with her arms and feet tied up. What he then saw was that her legs had been tied up to two nearby trees and her mouth gagged with pieces of cloth with her arms raised up and tied behind. He also noticed how the blood streaming from her head had become dry by that time. The brother then took steps to notify the police immediately with the aid of the neighbours and it was after the dead body was found that the police arrived on the scene and commenced investigations.

It was because of this lackadaisical process and the neglectful attitude of the police that the public in Jaffna took to the streets. The people then forced them to find the culprits while the final rites of the girl was conducted under a big protest.

The mother of Vithya, Sivaloganathan Saraswathy had served under a doctor in his house and one day on seeing 3 robbers who had tried to rob the house she had given evidence at the identification parade in courts of those 3 persons living in this area. When the police questioned her as to whom she suspects in connection with the murder of Vithya, what she had told the police was that because of the incident of identifying these robbers they had not been on good terms with her after that and that they could be connected to this murder. Accordingly when the police interrogated on suspicion the 3 brothers of the same family down that lane after a few days after this murder, they confessed before long that they were involved in this incident.

On the evidence supplied by them it came to be known that this rape and murder had been committed on a contract basis and that there are another 5 individuals connected to the incident. 4 persons employed in Colombo and a driver attached to Kayts Provincial Council belong to this gang of five. The police took then into custody the very next day itself. The said driver of the provincial council had been carrying on with a woman police constable and was planning to get married to her.

On later inquiries it was revealed that the other 4 individuals who were employed in Colombo had come to Punkuduthiv for the very motive of this murder and had fled to Colombo the day after the murder and had once again come to Punkuduthiv on the day the final rites of the student was conducted, thus attending the funeral too so that there would be no suspicion would be created about them. Though hey had planned to set off to Colombo after the final rites and after the weekend was over, because of the confession of the 5 individuals who were taken into custody as a result of the girl's mother's testimony, the police cordoned them in that area itself.

In the meantime people in Punkuduthiv had arranged to hand over a Sri Lankan Tamil national who held Swiss citizenship to the police and incidentally was the 9th suspect in the murder. However the police had not taken steps to take him into custody that day. It is reported that it was averted because of political influence. There is a rumour among people of Jaffna that this attempt had been averted by a female Deputy Minister of Jaffna and a reputed attorney-at-law.

In the process the Tamil national holding Swiss citizenship had hid himself after fleeing from the area at a place in Wellawatta, Colombo and young people of Jaffna had gone as far as setting fire to his house. Going into action on a complaint made to Jaffna Police by Duvarageshwaran, UNP organiser of Jaffna, the Swiss national was apprehended on last 19th.

It has been revealed to police that the rape-contract of Rs. 50000 has been activated with the purpose of taking revenge on the student's mother and it was further revealed that the student was abducted on an advance of Rs. 10000 and it was reported that the act of rape and murder had been committed subsequently. It is being revealed at investigations that this Swiss national had for the purpose of proving that the act of rape had been carried out in the proper manner and for filthy satisfaction had even videoed the rape incident and the murder.

It was in this background of the neglectful attitude and failing to arrest the political suspects displayed by the police that a hartal and protests flared up all over Jaffna. It was because of this that a great public uproar burst out that there are others connected to this fatal incident and they are not being arrested because of suspicions that it is due to political affiliations. The courts was stoned on the assumption that justice is not carried out in their case and consequently 127 persons were remanded by the police on these grounds. In the meantime 26 people were arrested for the offence of obstructing the road on protests carried out in Point Pedro.

Yet another matter reported from Jaffna is that since this incident has become a well-known topic all over Jaffna the TNA and other Parties are trying to focus attention on them by highlighting the fact that it is they who are appearing on behalf of the deceased student. Therefore, an unnecessary wave of protest has been created in Jaffna, it is understood.

The father of the deceased student happens to be an invalid suffering from paralysis and isolated at home while the 23 year old brother who located the girl's dead body is maintaining the family by engaging in labour-work. It was also learned that the deceased student is studying in the Advanced Level class in the Arts stream displaying abilities in the English Language and is supposed to be a student who stands out in the school. Deceased Vithya also has an elder sister and having got through her A/Ls is following studies at the university.
