19th Amendment in suspense?
No support from SLFP
Political sources reveal that according to the situation that has emerged, apparently the SLFP who claim
majority power in parliament would refuse to give support regarding the 19th Amendment in the constitution of Sri Lanka which is to be taken up for debate next 9th and 10th. It is understood that though Ministerial portfolios have been bestowed with the hope of winning support, it is learned that there is no possibility of changing decisions of the Party.
The chief allegation aimed at this Amendment is that Ranil who did not win votes has been made an Executive Prime Minister while President Maithri who did win votes being made to occupy only in a nominal sense. Already Champika Ranawaka including Hela Urumaya criticises this as having being presented in a narrow political gain for Ranil and had further said that Hela Urumaya and the SLFP would give support if the 19th Amendment is changed according to what they say, in the next few days. It is also understood that they had in fact prepared a separate list of propositions for that purpose. The most prominent change in that proposition is that instead of the chief person in the Cabinet being the Prime Minister as stated in the 19th Amendment, the President should be appointed for that position. Political sources also say that there does not seem to be any special removal of Presidential Executive powers existent at present according to what is designated in that proposal.
As such, political sources reveal that there are signs that the 19th Amendment is not going to operate in the right manner and under such circumstances a situation could arise where the parliament would be dissolved.
