Mahinda to appear for General Election ....
from Kangaroo mark
There were news that ex-President was to contest the forthcoming general elections from a
separate Party and from a separate symbol. This rumour has been confirmed as Mahinda Rajapaksa inclusive of all his supporters would be contesting at the next general election from the Kangaroo election symbol, which mark has been registered by the Sri Lanka Labour Party by Mr. A.S.P. Liyanage, inside sources say.Though the name of this Party has contributed largely in appealing for voters, as this symbol happens to be Kangaroo, it has brought about some inconvenience. Therefore, the leader of that Party has made a written request yesterday from the Elections Commissioner. With that very reason, the cat was let out of the bag that Mahinda was to contest from that Party. The relevant request has been made from former President Mahinda Rajapaksa himself.
When A.S.P. Liyanage met Mr. Mahinda Deshapriya, the Elections Commissioner today (18), he had mentioned that there is an opportunity of releasing symbols such as the pigeon and the peacock at present, it is reported. When Mahinda strives to contest from a separate Party, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party could break in two between the Hand and the Kangaroo, and it is the opinion of critics. It would be difficult to secure half a majority in parliament from the Hand or the Kangaroo. It is also the critics' opinion that through this procedure the Elephant of the UNP could acquire more benefit.
