South Africa wins!
Sri Lanka's dream of World Cup .... fades away!
Sri Lanka was beaten by South Africa in the World
Cup Super 8 match held today in Sydney, Australia. Simultaneously Sri Lanka was forced to leave the World Cup Championship.
Though Sri Lankan cricketing fans maintained great hopes about the match played today because the team offered no satisfactory or challengeable proposition to the South Africans, the opening players who were shifted in the Sri Lankan team, pathetically was disappointing and the first wicket fell in the second over itself. Though Thirimanne and Sangakkara got together and tried to rescue the innings, it too crashed when Thirimanne lost his wicket for 41 in the 20th over. The other players failed to provide support to Sangakkara. Hopes of the fans that Sangakkara would go for his 4th century fell apart today. The hat-trick that Thahir achieved spoke by itself about the the pressure by South Africans inflicted on Sri Lankan batsmen. Ultimately Sri Lanka was able to acquire a paltry total of 133 all out within a space of only 37.2 overs.
South Africa was successful in making their win in collecting the total required in double quick time after just 18 overs with only one wicket down and the only wicket-taker was Malinga. However 43 runs had been fleeced off him in his 6 overs.
In this manner, the dream of Sri Lankans faded into oblivion. Whatever it is, the honest dedication displayed by Sri Lanka's senior players and others in the tournament should nevertheless be appreciated.
