Father arrested for murder of children in Yatiyantota

Husband outraged when told by wife she was going to another lover .... Kills his two children
News is received from Yatiyantota about a father who had brutally killed his two children by strangling them with a waist-belt for having been outraged on hearing that his wife who was overseas had started an illicit affair.He has committed this murder with the motive of taking revenge on her. Subsequent to this incident, this father too had cut himself with an instrument and tried to commit suicide. However, the effort has not succeeded and he had received only injuries in the process.



This incident was reported from Yatiyantota, Beediyawatta area early morning yesterday (02).

After a telephone conversation with the wife overseas, when he was told that she would be starting a new life; the suspect-father had then murdered his 3 year old son and 7 year old daughter by strangling them.

On being informed about this incident, the Officer-in-Charge of Yatiyantota Police Mr. Asela Herath with a team of officers had taken steps to take the suspect-father into custody. When police visited the house concerned, they were able to recover the dead bodies of the two children lying on the bed in  the house.

The children who faced this tragedy at the hands of their father were 7 year old Ramya Chaturangani Joseph and 3 year old Tharindu Sasanka Joseph. Police say that victim Chaturangani had been studying at Yatiyantota Aliwatta Tamil Maha Vidyalaya in grade 2.

The mother of these two children had left for abroad for employment one-half years previously. After the mother went abroad, it was the suspect-father and his aunt who had looked after the two children. The suspect-father is a person who is a minor employee in a garment factory in Sitawakapura. this person who was born in Dematagoda had come to reside in Yatiyantota area 3 years before this.

His wife had gone overseas because of financial difficulties in the family.

The suspect-father had confessed that after going overseas his wife had developed an illicit affair. The suspect told police that she had constantly told  him about his connection. The suspect also told police that that the day-before-night his wife had spoken to him over the phone and had told him that she had started afresh life with her paramour. At that moment the suspect who was terribly heartbroken had strangled the two children with two waist-belts when they were on bed at about 1.30 early in the morning yesterday. At that instance the children had begun to struggle in pain. Having seen the children struggling, the suspect had put the children into a nearby bed, having felt sad over the sight. The suspect told the police that however, even by that time the two children had passed away.

The suspect further told police that later he had cut one place in his arm and tried to take his own life.

After the incident came to be known by the neighbours, they had informed about it to Yatiyantota Police.

the suspect who was taken into custody was to be produced before courts last afternoon.

Under instructions of DIG Mr. A. Gurusingha, OIC of Yatiyantota Police Mr. Asela Herath with SIs Mahinda Padmasiri and Ananda with other officers are conducting investigations.
