In relation to the abduction of 2 police officers in Kurunegala where one of them was murdered, the main suspect who was taken into custody when travelling together in the company of the police to indicate where weapons were hidden had died from gun shot injuries during a conflict that occured in the process, Police Media Spokesman told the media this afternoon.
This incident had taken place in Ududumbara police area in Kalugala, Kandy. After the suspect was taken into custody in Teldeniya, Kandy by officers of the Criminal Investigation Department yesterday (18) he had died when the police were on their way to the spot
concerned to recover the suspect's weapon today during which this fracas had taken place. an IP and a sergeant of the CID had received injuries and it is learned that they were admitted to Ududumbara Hospital around 7 in the morning. The body of the deceased suspect, it is reported is at present lying in Ududumbara Hospital.
The main suspect in the case where 2 police officers were abducted in Kurunegala and one was killed, police say was an individual who had been connected to a number of cases of looting in addition to other crimes.
It has been reported that this individual Kahandawala Aarachchige Tharuka Niluka aged 32 years who was involved in the 3 incidents of robbery from petrol sheds in Weweldeniya and Narammala in addition to the murder of the Kurunegala police officers had been living in Biyagama, Heiyantuduwa area.
The suspect was apprehended by a team of police officers of the CID while in Teldeniya and according to his confession, police officers have taken the suspect to a shrub-forest in Kalugala area in Ududumbara last night in order to locate a stock of weapons hidden there; when in the process he had got hold of a weapon lying there and had tried to fire at the police officers on which occasion the police had fired at the suspect. The suspect having received serious injuries as a result had died on the spot, police sources revealed.
This suspect who happens to be an Air Force soldier had been travelling on the motor bicycle with a woman and his 2 children when officers of the CID took him into custody day-before-yesterday in Teldeniya area.
