illicit affair having got caught
It was reported yesterday of a case where a husband had severed the arm below the elbow of his wife as a punishment for having carried on an illicit affair and had brought it in a bag to Kurunegala police with blood dripping from the severed arm.

According to what Kurunegala police say, yesterday (30) around 2 in the afternoon a person who came to the Criminal Offences section of Kurunegala Police Station

had brought with him a part of a human arm in a bag and had handed it over with a knife saying, "This is my woman's hand. She's going astray .... this is the punishment I gave her .... do what you'll want to me!"

The police who were amazed by this scene then after finding out where his wife was had taken steps to admit her to hospital and had also sent the part of the arm brought to them, to the hospital. The woman concerned was transferred to the Colombo General Hospital. though she is still under treatment, nothing so far has been reported about her condition.

A 29 year old man living in Bamunugedera area in Wewaravuma, Kurunegala was the husband who chopped off the arm of his wife. It is understood that because of an illicit connection she had been carrying on had got caught red-handed, this punishment was meted out by the husband to her. It was said that he had been overseas and had returned to the island recently and within the period he was abroad, this secret alliance had been going on by his wife which ultimately reached the ears of her husband. Because of this they had constantly been at dagger's end.

The wife had left the house last morning and gone to another house when the suspect had gone there and called her back saying that she would be taken to her ancestral home.

Thus, when escorting her on his motor cycle away from where she stayed, she was taken to a jungle area along Haal Road, Wanduragala and in the process with a knife which was in his bag, he had chopped off her arm elbow downwards.

When she was lying in the forest itself after this happened, the husband had taken the severed part of the arm in a bag and brought it to the police.

The suspect is expected to be produced before Kurunegala Courts today and Kurunegala Headquarters Police and Pothuhera Police are conducting further investigations on this matter.
