Debate on corruption of police

The country can't be developed because the police is corrupted -- Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero
Just because 30 are caught within 5 years ... it can't be shown as corruption-- Police Media spokesman: Ajith Rohana

Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero and Police Media Spokesman Ajith Rohana got involved in a debate during the confrontation of 'Derana Vadapitiya' held day-before-yesterday (Jan 21).

Sobitha Thero complained that how even a promotion could not properly be given because of corruption within the police at which allegation Mr. Ajith Rohana retorted saying that though there was a time in the past where such a thing could apply; that in the present day it does not apply and that because of offences
committed by a few, it is wrong to accuse everybody in that respect. On that occasion Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero expresses his ideas in this manner: "When there is a police which is connected to politics in this country, one cannot arrest these drug-addicts because of police ... can they ever bring them into custody? ... No... the police is expected to be obedient to them, according to the way they want. That's the bitter truth!

As such ... the police should be made free from politics. See ... how can promotions be given to the police? Can promotions be given without justice being carried out? .... Can't. We must speak the truth. They should be obedient to the Ministers as much as possible. As such ... if this country is to develop and progress ... if the police is freed from politics and the Police Commission is properly introduced and implemented -- the country could then be developed to a certain extent".

At that point the Police Media Spokesman Ajith Rohana expressed his views in this way: "The Ven. Thero spoke about these police promotions ... of police OICs. There was an era like that in this country ... I agree with that. At the time I joined the Police too there was an era like that.  very clearly say today that not a single OIC is appointed in Sri Lanka that way. If 30 people are taken into custody for bribes within a period of 5 years where 84,000 are serving the police ... that can't be considered as a criterion  and who can say that the Police is the most corrupted institution? On no occasion has the Bribery Commission said that the Police is the most corrupted institution. I am saying this with responsibility".
