on suspicion of robbing albino turtle worth over 100 lakhs
An albino turtle which was under the care of Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery and was of a value of over 100 lakhs had been stolen on December 15th.
This rare species of turtle which was about 10 kgs in weight, 60 cms in length and 39 cms in width was different from the other turtles because it was of an albino type, white in colour.
Though various individuals who had come to find out information about this turtle inclusive of a singer-son of a popular singer, about one and a half months ago inquiring to buy the turtle for a sum of 350 lakhs, the Head of the Centre had said that they have no idea of selling it.
The conservation centre which breeds turtles from their eggs has about 1,000 turtles at the Centre. However, this was the first time that a rare turtle of this type was found. It is the opinion of Zoologists that there is a possibility of breeding one albino or a white-coloured turtle from a thousand or ten thousand turtles and that a white turtle could be born because of a colour deficiency.
The name of this rare albino turtle robbed from the Turtle Conservation Centre of Pasal Mawatha, Kosgoda is Rosy by name.
Police media spokesman, Senior Police Superintendent Ajit Rohana said this afternoon that a statement is to be recorded by Kosgoda police from popular singer Amal Perera in connection with the missing turtle. Kosgoda police is conducting inquiries in relation to the incident.
