Sir's wife held me ... while tuition sir hit me with a club .... because of delay in paying tuition fees
An incident is reported from Weligama, Matara where a student of the class was mercilessly beaten by an iron rod by the tuition master and his wife saying that the student failed to pay the fees. Because of this assault by the said husband and wife, the student who was wounded had been admitted to the Weligama district hospital. The student said that he was called to the teacher's office unanticipatedly and when he responded, he had faced these circumstances.
The victim-student Dian Kalhara aged 16 years spoke about the incident in the following manner: "I was on my way to the temple in the company of my mother and a neighbouring lady and my mother went to a closeby boutique to buy some incense sticks and at that moment I got a message to come and I told that I'll go to the tuition master's office and come.
I then went to the office and asked sir's wife why I was not told to attend the tuition class. Actually it's she who is the administrator there. She then kept on scolding me.
At that moment the sir approached me with a mobile phone on one ear and also a club in the hand. Without even talking a word with me he got together with his wife and started battering me. When I was being beaten, it was the sir's wife who gripped me tightly ... and sir began hitting me with an iron rod in the hand. I then fell unconscious. Later my mother came searching for me ... and took me to hospital.
The student further said that after being admitted to hospital bleeding from the forehead, he has now recovered. Though it is a fact that he never expected facing a beating of this sort, he was to settle his fees anyway.
Dian Kalhara's father, W.P. Samantha (46) is an invalid having had one of his legs amputated as a result of a road accident. The mother has no income and are undergoing financial hardships. After the incident was reported to the police, the tuition master together with his wife were taken into custody.
After both the tuition master and his wife were taken into custody on the 22nd of September on suspicion, they were produced before Acting Magistrate Mr. Ariyasena Panangala it was ordered that the couple be released on 2 personal bonds of Rs. 2 lakhs each.
