Two daughters in two wombs ..... didn't know there were two wombs in the scan
A very rare occasion of a birth of a child which takes place one in a million in the world took place in the Base hospital in Dambulla. It was a case of a woman who gave birth to two twin daughters from two wombs.
Dilika Priyadarshini Siriwardena from a farming village in Kumbukkandanwala was only 20 years old and she gave birth to 2 female babies in her first delivery itself. The babies were born in the two wombs she possessed.
What the gynaecologist Dr. Sumith Warnakulasooriya of Dambulla Base hospital said was that though one or more births could take place in one womb in this country or abroad, it is rare to find two wombs and two births taking place in those two wombs.
This mother had admitted herself to hospital last 18th and the position of her womb had been abnormal and a number of medical tests had been done. It was decided to carry out a Ceasarian operation on her as the foetus in her womb had reached the expected time of delivery.
Though it was observed that there were two babies during the scan examination, it was reported that until the operation was performed, it had not been identified that she was having two wombs and that there were two babies.
As such, the operation was performed with great caution and the babies born are of the proper weight.
What Dr. Sumith Warnasooriya said was that women having two wombs are found around the world on rare occasions and in most cases they were unable to deliver. But he further said that this mother has fortunately had the opportunity of not only having two wombs but that the two daughters born in the wombs are of very satisfactory health. Consultant Gynaecologist Dr. Suren Jayawardena has confirmed that the condition of both children are satisfactory. With this abnormal delivery, the mother of the two children had been directed for an examination where her internal organs would be subjected to scrutiny.
Gynaecologist and Specialist in Childbirth Dr. Indika Senaratna, resident Dr. Dhanushka Jayasekera, Anaesthesia Specialist Dr. V. Dassanayaka, Drs. GK.G. Batagalla and Indika Wedagedera, Child Specialist Dr. Suren Jayawardena and the nursing staff of of the hospital contributed and co-operated in the operation.
