Releasing of milk powder from New Zealand stopped temporarily Is drinking Anchor a risk?
A risky situation has arisen regarding milk powder from New Zealand including milk powder Anchor which has the widest sales in Sri Lanka among other milk powder. After confirmation that a bacteria called Botulism that is hazardous to the human body was found only in milk powders of whey protein concentrates (not all types) produced in New Zealand, Fonterra the mother producer of Anchor issued a notice last week to get back all their products exported around the world. As such, most countries rejected stocks in wholesale quantities in countries including China and Russia who have taken steps to ban Fonterra products because of the risky nature of the product.
But what Fonterra Brands Lanka Company in Sri Lanka who import Anchor says is that they do not import milk containing whey protein concentrate. However, under this suspected case of the product, all dairy products which are suspected to contain such elements and whey protein concentrate milk powder imports have temporarily prohibited from being released from the port under instructions of Medical Services Director General. The Ministry of Health has mentioned that special attention had been given to this issue because of the problematic issue that had now sprung up regarding imported milk powder.
As such, Director General of Health Services, Dr.Palitha Mahipala had decided not to release from port all milk powder products imported from New Zealand. At the same time he had decided to remove milk products with whey protein concentrate that are on sale in the market.
Notice has been issued by the Health Services to subject all samples for tests on a continued basis from today obtained from every class of type of powder that have been imported and it has been confirmed that whey protein concentrate is not contained in infant milk powder available for sale presently in the market.
What is known as whey protein concentrate is the liquid by-product remaining after cheese is made from milk. Because a bacteria called Botulism is contained in whey protein concentrate, this has been the cause for this problem.
