Father of student determined to hang himself by climbing the 'Maara' tree --
A father of the Parents' Society who is fighting against removal of the Primary section of the Kottawa Dharmapala Vidyalaya had climbed a huge 'Maara' tree, taking with him a rope is preparing to hang himself.
Mr.Indrajith Perera is the convenor of Kottawa Dharmapala Vidyalaya Protection Society has attracted a large gathering coming from Kottawa junction wanting to witness him committing suicide from on top of the 'Maara' tree which stands by the side of the road in front of the school.
The case filed by the said Society sometime ago against withdrawal of the Primar section from the school had been dismissed by Courts. A verdict was given that a decision could not be given by the Courts. Though there had been several protests, picketing etc, by the Society in order to maintain the Primary section it has been to no avail. The Western Provincial Council had stood by their decision and this situation had provoked Mr.Indrajith Perera to commit suicide according to what he had said. He had brought a rope this morning, had climbed the huge 'Maara' tree which stands on the main road opposite the college; had later tied the rope to a branch and had also prepared the noose. By this time he keeps sitting on a large branch near it. He requests that the Primary section of Kottawa Dharmapala Vidyalaya be left as it is or else he would commit suicide. He makes this demand from on top of the tree.
The children are seated on mats laid on the nearby pavement. It was reported that boards carrying the message 'Hon.President, safeguard the Primary of Kottawa Dharmapala' was seen pasted on the wall behind the children. "Save my husband's life. He's trying to commit suicide not because he wants to admit our children to Year 1 in school," says Mr.Indrajith Perera's wife Tamara Kumari. "we don't have small children to be admitted to Year 1. Our elder daughter studies in Year 9 in Kottawa Dharmapala and the small son is in Year 3. My husband is trying to commit suicide on behalf of the Rights of other children. Save my husband's life. If he commits suicide, I and my two children would be left all alone in this world. It was not by saying that he is going to do a thing like this that my husband left the house this morning. Find a solution for this problem of these children and save his life," she says. "Mr.Bandula Gunawardena, Mr.Dinesh Goonewardena, Mr.Susil Premajayanth, all of them agreed to solve this problem and to let the Primary as it is. But politics in the Western Province wants to withdraw it from the school and take it to Wasumathiya Vidyalaya in Pelawatte, Kottawa. It doesn't matter if the Primary in Wasumathiya is developed. But I won't allow the Primary of Dharmapala in Kottawa be taken to Wasumathiya," says Mr.Indrajith. It is reported that Mr.Indrajith Perera who had climbed the tree and was prepared to put the noose round his neck had got down from the tree yesterday according to what Education Minister Mr.Bandula Gunawardena had told in parliament yesterday. However, according to what Mr.Indrajith Perera, he is still on the tree. He says that Minister Bandula's officers have conveyed absolute lies. He finally says that if the Primary was to be removed, he would definitely put the noose round his neck at 1.30 in the afternoon that day.
