Daily Mail newspaper in London has announced that a Sri Lankan antique which has a great archeological value since it belongs to the ancient Anuradhapura period is to be auctioned in London in April.
It has been found out that a British planter has taken it from Sri Lanka during the British rule around 1950s. It is also revealed that the moonstone is about 1300 years old. He has placed it at the back door of his residence which is situated in the county of Sussex. It was said that the moonstone has weighed about a ton and that the width is about 6 inches.
After the death of the planter, his daughter has owned his property and she hasn’t paid much attention to the moonstone not knowing of its archeological value. She has sold the house recently and the new owners have found out its true value. Then, they have sold it. One of the well known auctioneer company named Bonham’s have assessed its value and according to them, it’s value has been assessed to 50000 sterling pounds (about ten million rupees.)
The previous owner has told that her father has brought it home in around 1950’s, yet she hasn’t known that it is from Sri Lanka. She has recalled her memories on how she played on it trampling the animals which are carved in it.
When the new owners have wanted to sell it, she has told them that she has never thought that it would worth so much. It is to be auctioned on the 23rd of April in London. (The photographs of the moonstone are published BELOW)
Many more valuable things would have been taken by the foreigners who ruled our country. Later on Anuradhapura was named as a World Heritage by UNESCO.
