Galle’s nine year old Kavisha becomes a victim of a common antibiotic used in Government hospitals:
A student nine years old, at Galle’s Southlands Balika Vidyalaya, has met with an unfortunate death probably after she was injected with an antibiotic commonly used in Government hospitals, the day before yearsterday. The incident had occurred at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle.
The closest reason for her death after admission to the hospital is injecting of an antibiotic CEFTRIAXONE becoming poisonous. This antibiotic is more often than not used for patients in all Government Hospitals Island wide to cure deceases and infections.
It is not certain yet and proved that the death was due to a fault of the antibiotic or whether it had become allergic to her system. Until this fact is clearly proved and known for certain the usage of this antibiotic drug CEFTRIAXONE has been banned in all Government hospitals coming under the purview of the Ministry of Health Services.
The deceased nine year old girl is Kavisha Jayaodha Jayawardena a resident of Heenpendala area in Galle, a grade four student at Southland’s Balika Vidyalaya, Galle. She had been injected with the CEFTRIAXONE antibiotic for her ailment. It is learnt that she had made a plea, while crying to the Doctors and staff not to inject that antibiotic as she was feeling worse after it was injected. This was revealed by her mother after her demise.
It is learnt that her father is a supplier of medical equipment to the karapitiya Teaching Hospital. Before the antibiotic was injected the hospital has had a shortage of injection syringes, which he had promptly supplied. Yet investigations carried out by N.G.N. Karunaratna had not revealed anything positive with regard to any poisonous substance in the antibiotic injected. But it is learnt that further investigations in this regard are to be carried out.
It is reported that a canula had been fixed to her hand for injecting the said antibiotic. It is learnt that each time this antibiotic was injected she had got disturbed with a feeling of uneasiness and uncomfortableness before she passed away.
Anyhow until investigations are completed the Ministry of Health Services has banned the usage of this antibiotic in all Government Hospital coming under their purview.
