There were two students who scored the identical highest marks in the recently released Grade five scholarship examinations. The marks obtained by these two students were 196 marks each. One was a female student who hailed from a school in Talathuoya off kandy,which was Talathuouya Junior School. The family had lived in a difficult remote area. Her poor parents were striving hard to make ends meet. She had to leave home at 5 a.m each morning and was forced to walk more than two kilometres to come to the main road. When she returned home it was about 5 p.m in the late afternoon. They did not have any facilities at home and this girl had never attended a single tuition class. Her family was a poverty stricken family with very little means. In spite of all these she was determined to study what was thought in school.
The other student was from Richmond college, Galle.His name was Kisara and his story was completely contrasting to that of Anjalee. He had all comforts as both parents were doctors who worked at Mohamodera and Hikkaduwa Base hospitals.Kisara had been a bright student from his younger classes and was a bright prospect. His achievement was the first of its kind a student at Richmond College had achieved in the annals of the long history of the school.
The OBA had laid down a practice that if any student comes first from the College, in an all Island event be given a prize of Rs one Lakh. This event had taken place yesterday at the Richmond College premises. This matter took an unexpected turn yesterday. The prize was accepted by a girl. That was Anjalee a female student from Talathuoya Junior School who obtained the equal highest marks as Kisara.
How did she receive this prize money from Richmond College?
The prize money which to be given to Kisara Sandaluka Kodituwakku, together with his parents had thought that it was Anjalee who deserved to get the prize as she hailed from a poor family and also from a remote school, the Talathuoya Junior school. It was because of this sacrifice that this gesture was made it was considered as very eminence.
Although many other gifts were received through various sources by Anjalee Upeksha Ratnayake it was decided that this prize of excellence and also the monthly Scholarship fund too was gifted to Anjalee. This donation made was with great happiness was expressed by Kisara himself.
