Ruwanwelle Sobitha had waved his hands when he had left the courts premises

Ruwanwelle Sobitha alias Sunil Shantha had been sentenced for 20 years at the Kegalle Magistrate Courts yesterday. He had waved his hands like a politician when he left the courts premises. He had stated that even though, he was a monk he hadn’t done anything religious.
He had been sentenced for 20 years for raping a girl at his bungalow in Lihiniyagala, Bulathkohupitiya by promising her in giving her a job. He had been fined Rs twenty thousand and he had been ordered to pay a fine of Rs two lacks.
His lawyers had asked the Magistrate to loosen up his sentence saying that he is above 50 years and that he had been caught the first time for an offence, Further, the lawyers have mentioned that about 30 employees are working under him and the sentence can affect their lives as well because they have been depending on the suspect for employment.  Yet the Magistrate had not shown any respect and given redress regarding those issues.
It was said that the plaintiff had gone to Ruwanwelle Weda Madura in search of a job accompanied by her uncle and aunt. The defendant Sobitha had sent them to Lihiniyagala bungalow promising them to provide shelter and raped her.  This is how Ruwanwelle Sobitha had tried to defend himself:
“I am Sunil Shantha. When I was in robe, I used the name Ankondawila Sobitha. Now I am 50 years old and I was in robes a year ago. Even though, I was in robes, I haven’t done anything religious. I lived a luxurious life, had fun with women, ate and drank well. I was in robes for 26 years but I know nothing about religion. I had my office in a four storey building. I was ordained before Ven Jinarathana Thero in Sudharmarama temple. He is still alive. I have disrobed now. I am now a landed proprietor.
The land related to this incident is at Lihiniyagala, Bulathkohupitiya.
I have a Manager at that land. I haven’t met this plaintiff before this case. She came to me once in search of a job with his aunt and uncle. Then I told them that I want a receptionist and clerk to my land and then they came to my office at Ruwanwella. That was around 1.30. I bought them lunch as well. Then I told them that they need to meet the Manager at the land. I sent them by a three wheeler. Then I went to the land at around at 5.30 in the evening. They said that they want to stay the night and I said that they can stay if they want to. Then I got back to my office.
Such a rape case didn’t happen there. I stayed that night at my office in Ruwanwella.  About 30-35 people work at the land and 3 people work in the bungalow. Janitha had stayed the night with her uncle and aunt.
Do you know that it is illegal and at the same time against the disciplines of Buddhism to earn from a business as such?
“There is nothing wrong in that. Even though, I was disguised as a monk, I haven’t done anything religious. I was living as a landed Proprietor.”
