“Rumours have been created saying that I have got the 10th place and yet I am sent for Olympics as a favour”
“I have problems with the leadership as well”
-Thilini Jayasinghe-- the Badminton player sent for Olympics from Sri Lanka
Olympic Games are to be started on the day after tomorrow, the 27th. Thilini Jayasinghe will be sent for Olympics from Sri Lanka as the solitary badminton player. She was not among the team who were first selected to be sent for Olympics and yet she was taken for the team after a message they have received from the Olympic Committee.
However, Thilini is saying that she got this chance by working hard and yet also says that she had faced many problems afterwards. She is very disappointed to say that there have been rumors saying that she had been favored by the committee.
Some have created rumors that she was selected by the “wild Card” system and she shows that is a distortion of the truth and reality. She had also said that she deserved even the leadership but she had not been given the right opportunity.
She had called a media conference at the Sampath Bank main Branch which is her employer to reveal these discrepancies which she had been undergoing for so long.
“It is pointless talking of the problems I had to undergo after been selected for Olympic Games… I will keep those to myself… Some people think that I was selected by the “Wild Card” system but that’s not true.
My name was the first in the additional list. I was called as the South African player isn’t able to take part. Some have called it the “wild card”. I have placed the 107th in the grading of the Badminton players in the world. Since I have been placed as the 10th from the Sri Lankan grading, some think that I don’t deserve this chance. I have represented our country in about 10 World championships tournaments. People who have such experience are called for Olympics.
I haven’t graded well in Sri Lanka as I had to go abroad for International competitions. I have taken part only in 2 badminton championships which were held in Kandy recently.
I took part in Olympics last year and I was then the only one sent from Sri Lanka. I deserve the leadership. Yet, since I was chosen later, I lost that chance.
I have problems regarding that leadership. I didn’t have much time to talk with the relevant officials and since things could not be changed, I will go this time.”
