Nuwara Eliya post office which carries a historical importance had been modified into a holiday bungalow
With the introduction of e-mail and telephone, the Post Office had been thought as an out dated resource. Telegram which had been a valuable service to the people was stopped recently. In some Urban areas it is difficult to find a place for a Sub Post office since the amount of funds allocated for it by the Government is very low.
It is reported that the Nuwara Eliya Post Office which is more than 100 years old is to be closed soon and is to be modified into a holiday bungalow.
This Post Office was opened in 1894 and it is recognized as a significant post office among the Urban Post Offices in Sri Lanka,
A photograph of this Post Office was used in a stamp which was issued on the World Postal day due to its glory and grandeur.
Yet today it is a holiday bungalow and the top floor which was the quarters of the post master is now to be given as guest rooms. However it is reported that the income derived is deposited to the account of the Postal Department..
