The debate was very” vague and baseless”:
The debate that was fixed on ‘Derana’ “Wada Pitiya” last night was proved as boring and not at all fruitful although it was anticipated and looked forward to by millions of viewers to be an interesting debate.
The answers given by Bandula Gunawardena about the Rs 2500/- issue about that one could live for a month only to live and survive were very vaque.
Although it was anticipated to be an absorbing debate it ended in a stalemate as nothing emerged from as far as the viewers were concerned. Bandula Gunawardena, the Minister of Education had brought statistics to show the amounts charged for a student in a school hostel or in a University hostel as Rs 2500/- per month for meals only.
During this debate Bandula Gunawardena uttered all nonsense saying that this amount is devoid of charges for water, electricity etc. In addition he ridiculously answered that for meals contain only every other day eggs, meat or fish is .Ravi Karunanayake, the Member of Parliament said that the Royal College hostel charges Rs 3500/- while the Muslim Ladies College charges Rs 5000/- per hostel student for meals.
Ravi Karunanyake spoke outside the topic when he spoke about a forthcoming general election and the plans that have been laid by the UNP manifesto and new concepts to attract votes.
Then it was spoken by Bandula Gunawardena that at a Vauxhall street, a lunch parcel is sold at Rs 30/-.When Ravi karunanayke questioned the presenter Sanka as to how much a parcel of lunch is sold at ‘Derana’ canteen, he kept silent without answering. It was also told that a lunch at the Parliament canteen costs only Rs 150/-
Although Ravi Karunanayake challenged Bandula Gunawardena about the Rs 2500/- issue he had not brought along sufficient information, data and proof to challenge Bandula Gunawardena.
During the ‘live’ only 4 callers were entertained. Two of them spoke for Bandula Gunawardena’s favour whiles the other two in favour of Ravi Karunanayake. All these calls are suspected to be pre meditated calls. All these calls contained information not relevant.
The end result of the debate could be concluded as a highly unsuccessful debate, not fruitful at all. All viewers were not happy about the much awaited debate, which was not fruitful at all only a wastage of valuable time.
