The dream of hosting the 2018 Commonwealth Games next year in Hambantota were shattered when at an election held yesterday at the Marrion hotel in St Kitts and Nevis in the West Indies. Among the 71 countries that participated in the voting Queensland’s Goal Coast who contested from Australia won convincingly by obtaining 43 votes of countries whereas Sri Lanka’s Hambantota venue could muster only 27 votes.
Thus the bid was convincingly won by Goal Coast of Queensland, Australia by a majority of 16 votes.
It is learnt that the country Malaysia started developing once they hosted Commonwealth Games in their country. This is why Sri Lanka too wanted to bid for the Commonwealth games to be hosted in Hambantota.
Ajit Nivarrd Cabral the Chairman of the bid committee and our organiser addressing a foreign press briefing had said although we did not come on top is a matter of regret. But in future Hambantota is a city which is fast developing and in its progress this is another step towards it.
Seriously, who are writing this articles ???? In one place it says "Goal Post", and in another it says "Goal Coast". I mean it is one thing to be ignorant and stupid, but is the writer blind? Because it is very clearly seen in the picture as "GOLD COAST". Also on top of that he has mixed up the years as well - "The dream of hosting the 2012 Commonwealth Games next year in Hambantota". Disgraceful !!!!

ReplyDeleteThey were not interested in the games because Malaysia used it as a stepping stone for development, it was after India hosted it and spent 6 BILLION USD with a lot of it going to pocket. Disgraceful how the entire nation was taken for a ride.
