GOVT. DECIDES TO RELEASE 70 YEAR OLDS AND ABOVE AND THOSE WHO ARE CONVICTED FOR MINOR OFFENCES

BECAUSE OF SRI SAMBUDDHA JAYANTHIYA ALL ABOVE 70 YEARS IN PRISON TO BE FREED

GENERAL FONSEKA IS SHORT BY 10 YEARS

This year’s 2600th Sri Sambuddha Jayanthiya celebrations are to be held in a very large scale. As a part of these celebrations, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered to release 2600 convicted Prisoners. This number also includes also those imprisoned for minor offences and who have not been able to pay fines imposed on them.
For this age limit General Fonseka is not eligible as he was born in December 1950 and is still 60 years old. It is reported that there are presently 13000 prisoners and after this pardon it would be reduced to 10000.This is a record for the release of the most number of prisoners on a Vesak day.
