A suspect who had killed his mistress in the Rangala area, hidden the body in a muddy swamp, and fled the area, was arrested by the police yesterday (03). This thirty-year-old man had been hiding outside the area for several days and was taken into custody by Rangala Police officers when he returned to his home and was in the garden.
At the time of the suspect's arrest, an unknown odor was emanating from him, and on suspicion that he might have consumed poison, the police immediately took steps to admit him to Teldeniya Hospital for treatment.
This murder was revealed based on a complaint made by the suspect himself to the police, stating that the young woman in question had gone missing. Due to suspicions regarding the nature of that complaint, the police extensively questioned the suspect's mother, during which it was revealed that the suspect had assaulted and killed the young woman and buried her in a swampy area near the house.
Accordingly, the Rangala Police, acting on a court order, carried out excavations in the said swampy area. There, in a pit dug about three feet deep, the police were able to find the body of the murdered young woman. The deceased was identified as 22-year-old Wasana Sandamali Weerasekara, who worked at a garment factory.
As per the order of Magistrate Kamal S. Jayathilaka, her body has been sent to the forensic medical officer at Teldeniya Hospital for post-mortem examination. Police investigations have further revealed that the suspect, who is a married man, had abandoned his legal wife and had been living with the deceased young woman for about four years.
