Sergeant caught for allegedly defrauding four hundred thousand from Welikada Police

A police sergeant who was in charge of financial affairs and payments at the Welikada Police Station has been arrested by the Western Province South Crimes Division on charges of defrauding a large sum of government money and several other allowances.

Information regarding this financial irregularity came to light when an investigation team, including Accountant Mahesh Indika Thilakarathne of the Nugegoda Senior Superintendent of Police's office, went to inspect the account records of the Welikada Police.

The notable aspect is that the suspect officer, who was in charge of the cash books, had evaded the location when these investigations were taking place.

Subsequently, the investigating officers took steps to inform Senior Superintendent of Police Mangala Dehideniya, who is in charge of the Nugegoda Division, via a letter regarding the failure to properly account for government funds and other financial irregularities.

Further investigations confirmed that this sergeant had not properly credited a sum of Rs. 411,100, which was supposed to be credited from the Welikada Police Station to the government account of the Nugegoda Senior Superintendent of Police's office during the period from March 16 to May 15, 2026.

Furthermore, investigations have confirmed that he has committed several other financial frauds.

Accordingly, he fraudulently withheld Rs. 31,360 collected as cafeteria fees from Civil Security Department officers during the period from May 1 to June 1, 2026, as well as Rs. 170,150 allocated for the food of suspects arrested in April 2025, without handing it over to the relevant cafeteria manager.

Furthermore, police investigations revealed that the suspect had fraudulently obtained an allowance of Rs. 50,300, which was supposed to be given to two Civil Security Department officers attached to special duties at the Welikada Police, without providing it to them.
