You may remember the incident where Udari Warnakulasooriya, tele-actress was nabbed about 4 years ago for having tried to steal finished articles of clothing from an Odel dress outlet.
After news about the incident spread around, she vehemently told the media that time that it was all a lie, but she kept mum about the two photos clicked inside a room in Odel which were published in our website Gossip Lanka News after the theft.
Udari Chamika who was convicted of the two offences of theft of valuable women's clothing valued at Rs. 17500 from the Odel outlet and for retaining them in her possession, she was ordered by Colombo Chief Magistrate a suspended jail sentence of 1 year of 6 months each for which she filed action against Odel saying that after the theft she was harassed. She had also cited Gossip Lanka website too for having published photos of her theft on this same complaint as the testifying party.
Udari who was at that time playing the role of Sansala in the teledrama Bonda Meedum as a novice who had stepped into the field of teledrama became quite popular over the internet the following year and later became the Most Popular actress at the Sumathi Teledrama Award Festival.
Though this incident of theft of clothing became the talk of the town in the country, there was no word of it being uttered about it thereafter either by Odel Otara or by Udari for that matter.
As a Mega teledrama is scheduled to be released over TV this week with Udari playing the main role, she had these days begun running behind newspapers. It was during this time that Udari had spoken about the theft last weekend for the first time to Mawbima newspaper at an interview. Extracts from the interview as follows:
* What are you doing to become popular?
Oh god ....! I am not doing anything to become popular .... fortune has given me that .. automatically.
* Some say that Udari is a gossip-character?
I am not a gossip-character. But when you go to think about what is seen on Gossip .... I can of course justifiably think so.
* Some spread false gossip to become popular?
Maybe so .... but I don't want to do so.
* When Gossip speaks about you .... how do you respond?
I don't think about it .... don't take notice .... to tell in short .... I don't read those. Mud is thrown at me because of popularity no .... it's something done to earn something .... I feel sorry for them.
* If gossip is false .... it is your name that gets slandered, isn't it? Isn't it a problem to you?
Not a problem. But some day the truth will come to light .... till then I am patient.
* What is the gossip that really upset you?
A website reported that I went on a tour of Europe with a Minister. That time it was to Singapore that I went .... to my husband. For my fate .... that particular Minister also went on a tour to Europe on the same airplane. That was what was reported on that website. Later my husband spoke to that Gossip and said that Udari is with him and that it is a false gossip .... and to remove it from that website. The following day itself that same website reported that Udari's husband had made threats against life to kill them. When I saw that of course I felt sorry.
* Didn't you feel embarassed because of the Odel gossip?
Now .... it's enough of that ... as for Odel, it's like Udari .... as for Udari, it's like Odel. Because a case too went in courts .... it can't be said it's a bogus gossip no? But nobody knows what happened from the case.
* So, could you tell, for the readers to know?
No .... let's not talk about it. Not that way .... however much you ask me .... I won't talk about it.
* But because of the Odel incident Udari became popular beyond bounds?
Yes .... that following year I became the Most Popular Actress at the Sumathi Awards Festival.
* That means .... was it the popularity you gained because of that incident which happened being the reason for you to get that award?
No .... not at all. It was of course the response got for Sansala of Bonda Meedum teledrama. I got that preference because my fans didn't take any notice of any of the rumours which circulated.
