Mr. M. Nazmul Islam, Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), is currently embroiled in a major controversy due to a statement he made, referring to former national cricket captain Tamim Iqbal as an 'Indian spy'.
Tamim Iqbal had recently stated in an interview that before making a final decision regarding Bangladesh's participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup cricket tournament, other matters should be set aside and cricket should be given priority. Nazmul Islam made this controversial statement in response to that. Tamim had expressed these views against a backdrop where the BCB governing body decided not to tour India due to security reasons, and the Indian Cricket Board requested the Kolkata Knight Riders to release Mustafizur Rahman for the IPL tournament.
Following this incident, Nazmul Islam removed his Facebook post due to strong backlash, but screenshots of it have rapidly circulated on social media. In that post, he had stated that the people of Bangladesh had witnessed with their own eyes the emergence of another confirmed Indian spy.
Strongly protesting this statement, the Cricketers' Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) issued a statement on Friday, saying that they had sent a letter to the BCB President demanding that the official in question publicly apologize and that disciplinary action be taken against him. The association emphasized that it completely condemns this statement made by a responsible official of the board regarding the most successful opening batsman in Bangladesh's history, who represented the country for 16 years. It also stated that such remarks are unacceptable not only for a player like Tamim but for any player in the country, and that it is an insult to the entire cricket community.
The Cricketers' Welfare Association pointed out that such statements made by a director holding a responsible position on a public platform raise serious concerns about the code of conduct of the governing body officials, and urged the Bangladesh Cricket President to hold the official accountable and take appropriate action.
Current Bangladesh cricketers such as Taskin Ahmed, Mominul Haque, and Taijul Islam have also expressed their strong displeasure on social media regarding this incident. Taijul Islam stated that the words used by a director of the board about a national team player are completely unacceptable, and that it is a tasteless act contrary to their cricket culture. He further added that such public statements made while holding a responsible position raise issues of professionalism, ethics, and the conduct of officials, and therefore the director in question should publicly apologize.
Mominul Haque stated that publicly humiliating a senior player without showing even minimal respect raises questions about the fundamental discipline of the official concerned, and he strongly condemned this act, calling for swift and strict action against it. Taskin Ahmed, pointing out that cricket is the lifeblood of Bangladesh, mentioned that such statements targeting a former captain who has made significant contributions to the country are not conducive to the future of Bangladesh cricket, and he hopes that the relevant authorities will adopt a more responsible stance in the future.
