The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Forum (SLCERT) issues a special notice to the public, urging them to be vigilant about the cybercrime known as "sextortion," which involves threatening to publish photos and videos containing sensitive or private content online.

This cyber threat, which originates through social media networks, messaging apps, dating apps, or online games, carries a risk of targeting anyone. Here, criminals first build trust with victims in a friendly manner, and then obtain their sensitive photos or data, subsequently threatening them for money, additional photos, or various other benefits.

With the rapid advancement of modern Generative AI technology, criminals are increasingly inclined to create fake explicit deepfakes to intimidate individuals.

SLCERT advises that if one faces such a threat, all communication with the perpetrators should be immediately ceased, evidence of their messages and threats should be securely preserved, and appropriate assistance should be sought before blocking the relevant accounts.

The public is urged to be extremely cautious when sharing personal or sensitive information online and not to easily trust unknown strangers. It is also essential to be aware of how to block and report suspicious accounts. Even if you fall victim to such an unfortunate threat, always remember that you are not the culprit but merely a victim.
