An accident occurred in the Mohini Ela area on the main road between Nallathanniya and Maskeliya when a car carrying a group of people who came for Sri Pada pilgrimage during the off-season veered off the road and overturned into the canal.
A group of residents from Vavuniya and Kilinochchi areas arrived at the Nallathanniya Police Station on the 19th with the intention of pilgrimaging to Sri Pada. However, due to the prevailing bad weather in the area, traveling at night was risky, so the OIC, Chief Police Inspector N. D. Niroshan, and other officers advised them to start their journey the following morning.
The car, which was driving back to find accommodation for the night as per police instructions, met with the accident. At the time of the accident, there were three men and two women in the vehicle, and although the car sustained severe damage, none of its occupants were injured.
Meanwhile, at the very same location where the previous accident occurred, a car traveling from Nallathanniya towards Maskeliya met with an accident yesterday (20), resulting in another unfortunate incident where two individuals, including a schoolgirl traveling in a three-wheeler, lost their lives.
The Nallathanniya Police are conducting further investigations into the incidents.
