Tri-forces support to address the change in water quality distributed from the Kelani River to Colombo

Due to an emergency water quality issue at the Kelani River water intake point, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) took steps to temporarily suspend water supply to several areas in the Colombo and Gampaha districts from dawn today (25th). Based on information from the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), operations at the Ambatale and Kelani Right Bank water treatment plants were temporarily suspended, causing temporary inconvenience to consumers.

However, with the full cooperation of the tri-forces, the emergency situation affecting water quality has now been successfully resolved. After special laboratory tests conducted in accordance with the recommendations of the Disaster Management Centre confirmed that the water to be distributed meets the required standards and is safe for health, the water treatment plant authorities have taken steps to resume water distribution.

With this step, it is expected that water supply to the main areas around the water treatment plants will be restored to normal within the next few hours. However, due to the distance within the system and pressure variations, the Water Supply Board points out that there may be some delay in the complete restoration of water supply to areas such as Battaramulla, Kotte, Pamankada, and Nugegoda.
